HVTN Excels in Efficiency Benchmarks in Clinical Research Performance

Network Evaluation Committee (NEC) findings award high marks for the latest evaluation period

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) exceeded national standards for clinical research demonstrating superior efficiency across a number of measures including speed of protocol development, study opening and study enrollment of volunteers

The Network Evaluation Committee (NEC) evaluates the operational effectiveness of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) in achieving its goals. Network performance is measured at multiple points along the lifecycle of a protocol, from concept development to publication of findings. This year’s report includes data from HVTN protocols that were active during the evaluation period from December 1, 2023, to November 30, 2024.

Commendable HVTN Network and CRS Performance

HVTN implemented 19 protocols at 33 active National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)–funded domestic and international CRSs. HVTN Network and CRS performance is commendable; the highlights are listed below:

Sustained Protocol Development

  • The number of protocols submitted to DAIDS Prevention Science Review Committee (PSRC) / Vaccine Research Program (VRP) (9) and the number of protocols completing development (9) exhibit sustained protocol development activity.

Time Savings

  • The median protocol authoring time decreased by 17.5 days, reflecting the continued efficiency of HVTN protocol development.
  • The median protocol open time decreased by 16 days, reflecting new efficiencies following the protocol open (Network Readiness) changes implemented during the last reporting period.

Study Enrollment and Visit Completion Excellence

  • Both enrollment for the period and cumulative enrollment exceeded 100%.
  • Visit completion totals for all categories met standard.
  • Participants in 19 trials completed 3,590 visits, an increase of 29% since the last reporting period.

Data Management Quality (DMQ) Metrics

  • Three of 4 data management quality (DMQ) metrics met the standards for active protocols.
  • The SDMC processed 74,729 case report form (CRF) data pages, an increase of 110% since the last reporting period.
